There was this one time a Hokushin Itto Ryu practitioner came to me and did Kendo keiko, he did a mune tsuki and told me he scored because "Hokushin is an old form of Kendo, and we still learn it, our school is older, hence it is a score" and he just osame-to and left the scene. For me 道 is much more focused on the spirit, while 術 is focused on learning the skill to kill/pressure and apply those skills in other wazas and such.īut I do agree with you on the approach from the jyutsu guys, most of the koryu people I know are just way too proud of their little heritage they claim to have. I hate to say this but I disagree on your approach on 道 and 術. Having said that, the snobbery I regularly encounter in people who insist that their take on an art encompasses strictly jutsu while the do folks somehow just go through the motions tells me they simply have no idea what they're talking about-perhaps even what they're doing on the dojo floor. If I swing the sword, sooner or later I will understand. Simply put, if I want to understand, I swing the sword. Ji (technique, "jutsu"), ri (theory, the way, "do"), ichi (are one). One with the other is a martial artist without aim or understanding.

In fact, ji-ri-ichi is a requirement in the ZNKR/BKA for passing rokudan and is the most important characteristic of a qualified instuctor.

Like ji-ri-ichi, a martial artist will never be complete without the full understanding of both theory and technique. I can't describe it anymore precisely than that except to add that both are required for the higher purpose of understanding the totality of the artform.

Besides, even if the two were separate, I would love to have someone itemize the material differences between the two and to explain to me why they believe one to be superior than the other.īased on what I've witnessed, that belief typically suggests iaijustu is somehow superior because of an idea that it's faster (is it?), presents more "realistically" (really?) and is supposedly free of the mindstuff associated with the slow and deliberate (eh?) do aspect of the artform (um).Īll of that is nonsense, and here's why: jutsu IS do and vice versa. I strongly lament when people draw distinction between those things because often that distinction is made to somehow elevate one approach and disparage the other. I have always maintained there is precisely zero distinction between jutsu and do, as they are something of a symbiotic couple. My take on the iaido vs iaijutsu debate is that it's an asinine one. Who are they associated with in Japan? The DNBK? I thought they flew solo with the "federation" being Sekiguchi Komei himself. What I'm really surprised was although Komeijuku screams practicality, the way that they cut and how they favour anime-esque giant katanas made me feel a huge irony of their philosophy of having practicality. But then again, Iaido and Iaijyutsu take different approach. I mean, I don't think I will ever have a chance of killing the guy in front of me if I do Mae like how I would do in Seitei Iai, but I think I will feel much more confident if I were to do somewhat like Komeijuku guys do.

A lot of people criticize the ways of Komeijuku but I believe Iai should be more practical like how the Komeijuku is approaching than how the ZNKR is(and I know this is a bold statement). Iai"jyutsu" is a very, very interesting approach and I do admire what they are doing with it. They literally have their own special waza like the ZNKR's Seitei Iai and focused more on core strength and effectiveness. The Komeijuku dojo will never be able to be affiliated with any of the Kendo association because they are affiliated with a different association in Japan. Just want to thank you all for the advice. I am not very well informed on the different styles of Iaido and want to make sure where I invest my time is a legit. The next is an dojo that is a member of the British Kendo Association, I am unsure as to what style they teach, but they also teach the naginata.īoth are on days I am free so that isn't an issue and cost isn't an issue either. They are a well respected Aikido dojo with a legit lineage from what I have researched if that makes a difference.

According to Wikipedia, he 'got permission to adapt forms of Muso Shiden Ryu Iaido which he studied whilst in japan and taught these forms to his Aikido students as the Ia-Batto-Ho system '. The first is an Aikido dojo that doesn't appear to be affiliated with any governing body for Iaido, but they claim to was taught to them by 'Kazuo Chiba Sensei' when he taught at the dojo for 11 years by their account. I am looking to start Iaido, there are two schools near me but I am unsure which one to choose.
